Wonderful world of medicine

The day that I got my packet of all of the documentation for IVF I was astounded by all of the medications that are necessary in one cycle of IVF. I knew there were lots of medicines involved but I have had my eyes opened. Not only was I surprised by all the meds, but I was surprised to learn that we would have to mix most of them with the diluet ourselves.

First we start with a couple of packs of birth control pills. Those are to regulate my cycle and start forming good eggs. Next comes an injection called Lupron. This one gets shot into my arm (by my hubby) and suppresses the formulation of eggs. Then we add another injection called Repronex. This one promotes growth and maturation of developing follicles.. Then one more injection called Follitism, just for good measure. This one used in IVF to develop multiple eggs to be available for fertilization in the lab. Once the eggies are good and ready I get to have Bry give me a 2 inch needle in the fat of my bum to force ovulation. Sounds fun, huh?

This will bring us to the retrieval. Once the retrieval happens I have to start taking Medrol and Doxycycline. Those help minimize infection rates because we are doing ICSI and Assisted Egg Hatching. Once I have the transfer I have to start taking progesterone support. It is hard to imagine that I will be pumping my body full of so much medication in the course of a month and a half. We sure do live in a wonderfully advanced age.

The 2" needle is LOADS of fun! Isn't it amazing the amount of hormones involved and the things we do to conceive our children? Really does put it into perspective how incredible a miracle it really is. You guys will do just fine with the injections. If my hubby can handle it, Bry will be just fine!

The worst is giving yourself the shot in the bum while twisting around to look in the mirror so that you can get it positioned correctly. (I was a donor and gave myself the trigger shot.)

About this blog

Over 8 years we have struggled through 3 IUI's, 6 rounds of IVF, several RE's, hundreds of appointments and the loss of three little angels. Now we find ourselves the proud parents of two perfect little girls and a wonderful little boy!!

Both of our girls struggle with some disabilities but that won't keep us down. Each day has it's own brand of insanity but we love it. Most days I am more monkey wrangler than mother but I do the best I can. Todays goal - getting to tomorrow.
