A Word on Going in Public With Twins

Going just about anywhere with twins in such an interesting thing. You would swear that people have never seen two babies in one place at the same time. It is a little like being a celebrity (but minus the perks). When we go to the mall or Target we have to plan in an extra 30+ minutes for all the of conversations that we are going to have. There are really two types. The first, and the ones I love, are the other twin parents. Meeting other twin parents is like meeting fellow members of a club. They don't look at you patronisingly or with a strange curiosity, rather they have advice to give or you can just share a laugh at the general lack of sleep and sanity in your house. That part of being a twin parent is fun. Anyone who has had twins gets to be part of this great club.

The second and slightly less fun are the Curious George's. Not that people are rude, I know that they mean well but I have had the same conversation about 1,000 times. "Oh look twins." "How old are they?" "Are they identical?" and the dumbest (because I have a pink stroller, ppink car seats and the girls are almost ALWAYS in pink or purple) "Are they boys or girls?" At first it was all so cute and sweet that people loved twins. Now I find it so darn time consuming.

Recently we lost power and so we went to the local diner to have dinner. We chose a low key location so that the girls wouldn't bother anyone. The girls were so well behaved and slept through the whole thing. But in the hour or so we were there about 5 people came up to us while we were eating to ask questions. To boot this older woman STARED at us through the whole meal. I felt like saying "if you keep staring, maybe just maybe one of them will do a trick." I understand looking (after all they are darn cute ;>) ) but staring is rude no matter what the reason.

It is a very strange thing to take the girls out and have so much attention. I know I sound like I am bitching and after all it is wonderful to have attention for such a wonderful reason. I just have to remind myself of that sometimes.

I find myself avoiding eye contact all of the time, and that is so not me.

I feel the same way about pregnancy. At first you feel special when people make comments, but then you just start feeling like you want to disappear because people are looking at and judging YOUR BODY. It's especially creepy when men do it--I just don't like being looked over, whether it's sexual or otherwise.

Yep - we get stopped all the time when we're out with the twins. Some days, I really enjoy it and other days, not as much.

About this blog

Over 8 years we have struggled through 3 IUI's, 6 rounds of IVF, several RE's, hundreds of appointments and the loss of three little angels. Now we find ourselves the proud parents of two perfect little girls and a wonderful little boy!!

Both of our girls struggle with some disabilities but that won't keep us down. Each day has it's own brand of insanity but we love it. Most days I am more monkey wrangler than mother but I do the best I can. Todays goal - getting to tomorrow.
