Surgery Complete

Sorry I didn't post yesterday. It was a very long day and our freaking internet was down once I got Abby to sleep and could post.

I will start by saying the surgery was a success. It was a lot harder on Abs than we thought it would be. If you're in a hurry than you can skip the details and scroll down to see the before and after pics. Otherwise, read on my friends. :>)

The night before surgery was tough. Gracie went to my parents so Abby knew something was up. She didn't sleep until midnight and we had to be up at 4:30am. We arrived at the hospital (with a wide awake baby) at 6. We waited until 6:20 and then they called us back. Our nurse was fantastic and put us at out ease. I explained my crazy "will the surgeon cough, sneeze, twitch" neuroses and she was a riot. She is also a neurotic individual. We were afraid that she might be coming down with a cold but they said they would be able to tell from her vitals if she was sick. Everything looked perfect (great sats, BP, pulse, temp, lungs clear). So at around 7 everything got rolling. Anesthesia came in to talk to us. The surgeon came in (AND SNEEZED TWICE ;>) ) to go over everything. They gave her the anti-anxiety meds at 7:30 and she didn't go to sleep but was very loopy. Before 8 they came to get her. She went willingly which was a huge load off my mind. The family room was great and had a big screen that showed when she was in surgery or recovery.

At about 9:30 the surgeon came out and said everything went great. She did well and had no problems. They needed to stick her FOUR TIMES to get an IV started and they scratched her cords a little so her throat is really sore. They were supposed to take us back to recover right away but it took a while to get her extubated so it was about 45 minutes before they came for us (and of course I was worried sick).

When they brought us back it was not a pretty picture. She was beside herself, was warm, crying blood, terribly swollen from the fluid and didn't look like herself. I had a few moments of panic. It took about an hour to get her up enough to drink a little and get the IV out. We took her home and she was a lot worse off than I expected. My parents took Gracie again so we took Abs right home. She whimpered in her sleep for upwards of two hours from the pain and discomfort. In the afternoon her fever spiked to 103 so we had to call the hospital. They felt that we had things under control enough to keep her at home. She was pretty miserable all day yesterday. She did wake a few times and ate a little but not much.

She didn't sleep well last night and woke up very cranky today. Her eyes look very straight but it is really weird. She looks completely different. You don't realize how much eyes change a person. When I look at her it is almost like looking at another baby. Today she still has a fever, cough and her eyes seem to be bothering her quite a bit. Hopefully little by little she will get back to herself.

Oh - she is so precious! I'm so glad that the surgery went okay. I can't imagine what it was like for you to not be by her side the whole time... I'm so happy that everything worked out well... Hopefully she gets back to feeling like herself soon... *HUGS*

I am so glad it went well for you. I had the same surgery when I was 1 and 3 (back in the 70's). Thanks for the update :)

She's such a tough little girl! I'm glad the surgery went well, she's adorable! :)

Of course she was beautiful the way she was, but as parents, we never want our children to be made fun of. She'll be better for it in the long run. It's pretty common (Anna Nicole Smith's daughter had the same thing and she was in the spotlight all the time - can you imagine?) When she's a teenager she'll probably look back at her old pics and thank you for having it fixed. Babies recover very quickly and I'm sure she'll be fine. You're a wonderful mother!

About this blog

Over 8 years we have struggled through 3 IUI's, 6 rounds of IVF, several RE's, hundreds of appointments and the loss of three little angels. Now we find ourselves the proud parents of two perfect little girls and a wonderful little boy!!

Both of our girls struggle with some disabilities but that won't keep us down. Each day has it's own brand of insanity but we love it. Most days I am more monkey wrangler than mother but I do the best I can. Todays goal - getting to tomorrow.
