The other night the strangest thing happened. Abby woke up around midnight screaming at the top of her lungs. I guess that part isn't so strange since the kid is the crappiest sleeper I have ever been around, but I digress. I went in to give her her sippy cup of water and her blankie. It didn't help. I picked her up and rocked her in her chair and it didn't help. I brought her into my room and sat on the bed and her screams got louder. At this point she had woken up Gracie and Brian. It took a few minutes for Brian to point out that she didn't even look like she was awake. It dawned on me that she was having either a nightmare or a night terror. I learned about night terrors in grad school but never saw one for myself. It was bizarre. We couldn't wake her but all she did was scream. Thankfully after about half an hour she wore herself out. We are REALLY hoping this is not going to become a regular event in our household.

Night terrors SUCK. Kate has them (or nightmares, we can't tell which) periodically and they're horrible to deal with. Usually we don't realize what's going on until after we get in her room and then it's too late. So we spent 30-60 minutes with a frantic, screaming, grunting child. NO FUN!
I hope that your experiences with them from here on out are few and far between.
Emma has them here too! About 2 a week sometimes more depending on what else is going on. I hate the blank stare in her eyes and the knowing that there is nothing we can do. They say not to wake them up and to try to coax them back to sleep but it isn't always that easy. Hopefully this won't be a re-occuring thing for you guys. It started for Em though around her 2nd birthday now that I think about it.
My daughter has these. So far, I think there have been four. The first was terrifying and awful! Now we are more used to it.
