A couple people have asked why Abby wears braces. The short answer is because she pronates. The longer explanation is that because of the neurological and structural problems she walks (and sits, and runs, and so on) with a strange position to her feet and legs. It can cause problems throughout the whole body from foot, to hip to back. So we are trying to avoid painful surgeries later with a simpler solution now. The other day I was flashing pictures and I took this good one that shows what her feet so naturally.
When she walks her feet want to roll inward as she takes each step. It isn't terribly problematic for the foot itself but it knocks everything else out of whack. You can develop long term problems with heel spurs, ankles, knees and hips. Hopefully her need for the braces will only be while she is young but I still believe braces beat the heck out of screws and pins.

You know, my Abby's feet turn in when she walks too. The PT told us to give it a few months, then we have to see someone about it. When did you notice it with Abby?
C - Abby has pronated since she started walking. Her legs even did that "twisty" thing when she was small. No one wanted to do anything about it until our neurogeneticist insisted that the braces would help. I'm glad he did because we do see an obvious increase in stability and stamina.
