Did you know that April is Autism Awareness Month? I feel like we should all know this. Autism and other disorders on the spectrum are becoming so prevalent. Almost all of us know someone whose life is personally touched by autism. What strikes me the most is that in the midst of a society where spectrum disorders are so common people have no idea how to deal with this issue. I have personally seen mothers and fathers treated like a purple elephant because their child has autism and no one knows what to say.
I think during the month of April those of us who know someone on the spectrum or know someone who knows someone we should make it our goal to learn just a little. To educate ourselves just enough that we know what a spectrum disorder is and what it is like for a child or family member. To know what to say to parents when all they need is a kind hello when they are having a rough day.
You can get information at the Autism Society, Autism Speaks or a million other online resources. I urge you to go find out what autism REALLY is and stop relying on our preconceived notions of what we think it is.
